Everybody knows these but why though? Why do we do it? Why a week? Why not just a day or two? What is even a college week? Ever since my first year here at MCL, these questions have been at the back of my head, popping up every now and then. More so when CMET, CCIS, and MITL weeks have already passed, and CAS week is right around the corner.
As CAS week comes a term closer, I want to dig deeper about College Week. Fortunately, Sir Angelito Platino, the head of the Office of Student Services, is kind to let me take time from his busy schedule to ask him with these questions. When I presented Sir Platino with the questions of what a college week is and what these celebrations are for, Sir Platino answered:
“If we are going to contextualize it. In MCL, college week is the time where a particular college celebrate their existence as a college. So there are several programs in the college and it's through the college week they are able to highlight and showcase whatever they have learned in respect to their programs. And also it a time bonding amongst the members of that college, amongst the students of that college through sports competition, through academic contest, through team building games.”
Like foundation day, I guess anyone who thinks about deep enough would piece that together. And I asked why we celebrate it for a week.
“Well it’s a week because normally the activities may require an entire week to be utilized. Nonetheless, it only called a week but sometimes it’s only four days or three days but they call it college because they can't call it college days. Probably it's already three days, that's already half a week so they already call it college week.”
It's common sense that a big celebration would require more time to celebrate. Then I asked if there was any reasons for their placements throughout the year.
“The idea here is we try to spread the schedules throughout the term. So for each term there is at least one college week. So most likely in a particular term there is one or two college weeks.”
I was really hoping for a deeper meaning to the college weeks or the very least a it’s placements. I guess some celebrations don’t have to have a lore behind them to make them special. Have our college existing is enough to be celebrated. Without these colleges where would we be. These are the time we showcase what we learn and shine. So we, MCL students must celebrated with our hearts at every of our college week. Be proud Malayan.
